Thirtysomething Episode Guide
After returning to the USA with some money to burn I decided to start building a quality entertainment system, complete with HTPC, Blu-Ray, HD-DVD, and HD television service. So I purchased a 40' Samsung HD (1080p) LCD TV, a Harman Kardon HDMI AV receiver, a Series3 Tivo, an XPS 420 (HTPC), and HD-DVD/PS3 Blu-Ray players.
I have done my cabling using HDMI and optical SPDIF (for the HTPC and PS3) and intended to use the HDMI repeater in the AVR to get a HD picture with surround sound through my AVR. Of course, due to all the issues with HDCP nothing wants to work with my AVR (which is basically an HDMI switch). Whatever, I used the optical out on my TV to get sound to my AVR. But it just doesn't sound as good, so I started using optical or coax direct to my AVR whenever and wherever I could.
I am on my second HTPC now due to various technical issues, relating to HDMI/DVI output or my inabaility to get anything other than 2-channel PCM out of my SPDIF. Creative sucks.
But of course my cable box won't play nicely now, video stutters, et cetera. So I bought a Tivo Series3 HD. Shipping problems, install problems, now the thing won't boot after two visits from the cable company to install my Cablecards.
Now I am being told by Cox that they are switching formats to 'switched digital' and that my Tivo may not work anyway. Whatever, frankly I am sick and tired of repeated returns and service calls on all my components due to compatibility issues, defects, and the restrictions of HDMI/HDCP. I've spent enough money already and still nothing works right. I'm done with cable, iTunes quality sucks, and I don't expect DirecTV to be much better.
I am willing to pay for my content, heck I want to pay for my content. But as an honest consumer I am repeatedly getting screwed by high costs for restrictive DRM/HDCP and defective products. I spend more time mounting and positioning speakers or fiddling, fixing, or returning my equipment than actually enjoying it. I'm done.
So now I have to consider the one option that 'works' and doesn't carry the restrictions: BitTorrent. Heck, if I have HD service in the home aren't I entitled to it anyway?
I could have outlined at length all the technical issues, but I have ranted long enough and I've stated my point. I would be curious in hearing about the experiences any of you have had getting your systems up and running. I'm either stupid, expecting too much, or right on the money and there are others who are equally frustrated.
